Students from the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) Regional Centers scored tops in math and physics competition sponsored by the University of Oklahoma at Norman .
Ryan Clark, Kiefer, and Jay Willhite, Cleveland , tied with six other students for third place in the OU Engineering Math and Science Contest held at Norman . Clark and Willhite are students in the OSSM Drumright Regional Center on the campus of Central Technology Center . Eight of the top twelve students in the meet were from the OSSM Regional Centers located at various CareerTech Centers across the state.
Six hundred high school students participated in competition that ranged from exercises in trigonometry and calculus to physics test projects in gravity, force, magnetism, and electricity with practical applications in bridge building, gliders and a popular egg drop.
Students in the OSSM Regional Centers, such as the one at Central Tech in Drumright, are able to enroll in college-level math and physics courses for three hours each day, while remaining enrolled at their home high schools and are able to continue to participate in their local school activities throughout high school.
Central Tech officials say that recent follow-up reports indicate that the Regional Center graduates have a significantly higher completion rate in college than do their classmates who do not participate in the Regional Center studies. |
