Special Kwikset Practical Nursing Class Graduates at Central Tech Sapulpa
Twenty-three students in the special “Kwikset” Practical Nursing Program at Central Tech-Drumright celebrated Thursday evening, April 13th, as classes ended and graduation rites began. State Senator Ted Fisher, D-Sapulpa, was guest speaker for the event and applauded the graduates for their dedication and encouraged them to make the most of their new skills in the healthcare field.
Sen. Fisher told new healthcare professionals: “All of you have worked very hard and your families have sacrificed so you could reach this point in your life today. You are truly role models to me and your friends. You are living examples that God often blesses us in times of disaster.”
Of the class of 23, two students, Patti Lyons of Bristow and Lula Johnson of Beggs, had perfect attendance and 12 made the Central Tech Honor Roll. Johnson was honored as the Outstanding Student of the Class for her year's work and attendance record.
Each was formerly employed by Kwikset Inc. at Bristow prior to the lockset manufacturer's layoffs and closing in 2005. This special class of former Kwikset workers was formed as part of the comprehensive assistance initiative of Central Tech, the Governor's office and the state CareerTech system to help families impacted by the Kwikset closing.
After a year of intense studies and clinical practice at area hospitals and other healthcare facilities, the commencement exercises signaled the end of formal instruction and the arrival of the final State Board Exam that will propel each into a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
