Melvin Taylor, Executive Manager of the Bristow Housing Authority, was named Supported Employment Advocate of the Year by the Oklahoma Association for Persons in Supported Employment in ceremonies March 2nd in Tulsa .
"Taylor has been a role model for supported employment and has accommodated supported employment clients by placing them in jobs that give them the opportunity to succeed and learn new skills," said Central Tech Supported Employment Program Coordinator Kim Howard .
"Melvin volunteered to be a member of the Central Tech Supported Employment Advisory Board and offers valuable input on the various aspects of the Supported Employment Program. He is more than willing to work with and advocate for employees who have special needs. On many occasions, Melvin has taken the time to help employees with work related issues as well as personal problems. He encourages all employees to participate in holiday and recreational activities; therefore, fostering a sense of family and belonging," said Howard.
The Employment Specialists in the Central Tech program at Sapulpa nominated Taylor for the award, noting that Taylor has employed many Central Tech Supported Employment clients and works with the supported employment staff to complete various situational assessments on the job site. Although the clients have had widely differing abilities, Taylor has the necessary patience and understanding to help each of them learn his/her job and develop their skills to their fullest potential, says the staff members. He also works with the summer youth program and other youth related programs in the surrounding area. |
